2016 Homebrewer of the Year

Another year has come to a close, which means it’s time time to announce the 5th BHG Homebrewer of the Year.  And for the second year in a row, the best homebrewer in Bellingham is clearly Jenn Tadder!

Congratulations Jenn on continuing to crank out top notch beers out in the woods.  Kulshan is lucky to have gained you as an employee this year.

For the third straight year, Frank at Aslan Brewing has offered a collaboration brew with the winner.  A huge thank you from the BHG to Frank and the Aslan crew for such an awesome opportunity and their continued support of us.  We look forward to seeing what Jenn and Frank come up with this year to follow up last year’s Gold Medal winning Vienna Lager (no pressure).

The race for the 2017 HomeBOY is on now, good luck brewers!

2016 Best of the Bay Results

The judges have finished, the awards have been handed out, and the results are in! Thanks to everyone who entered, judged, and volunteered their time and help in any way to make this event possible. Thanks also to our many generous sponsors for donating prizes and raffle items.

This year’s Best of Show winner was Ryan Wallace of Mt Vernon with an Irish Red Ale. In addition to taking possession of the mug of awesomeness for the next year, he gets to brew his winning recipe at Kulshan Brewing and have a release party there. Congratulations Ryan!

Best of the Bay 2016

The 2016 Best of the Bay homebrew competition is right around the corner! If you’re interested in entering the competition, registration is now open!

Sign up here: http://bellinghambrewers.com/bestofthebay/

This year, the bottle drop-off starts 7/13 and ends 7/27. Each entry is $7 for non-members and $4 for BHG dues-paying members. The competition will be limited to a maximum of 6 entries per person.

We’ve also opened up the competition to cider entries this year, so keep that in mind if you have any 2015 ciders hanging around!

Winners will be announced Sunday, August 7, at our Best of the Bay Homebrew Festival from 11am – 3pm in the Boundary Bay Annex Garden (off Maple St). The festival will be open to family and friends, so bring them out to show off all the great beers we brew! There will be games for kids and a non-alcoholic beverage option. We will have food for purchase on-site.

BHG Commemorative taster glasses will be for sale for $10 ($5 for members). You don’t need to buy a taster glass to come into the festival, but all proceeds go to support the Bellingham Homebrewers Guild. There will also be a raffle to win cool homebrew-related prizes, and other BHG swag for sale.

AHA Big Brew 2016

This Saturday the BHG will be participating in the AHA’s annual Big Brew event by hosting a group brew.  Anyone’s welcome to come, either just to hang out or better yet to bring your equipment and brew with us!  We’ll be providing food, you bring some homebrew to share.  If you’re interested in the BHG 7th anniversary Imperial Porter recipe that some members will be brewing, see here for details.

2015 Homebrewer of the Year

IMG_1551Congratulations Jennifer Tadder on winning the 2015 BHG Homebrewer of the Year! After taking several medals at the Best of the Bay and dominating a couple of our club comps, this likely does not come as a shock to many of you that have tried her beer. In addition to some new hardware for her trophy shelf, Jenn has won the opportunity to brew a collaboration beer with Frank at Aslan, and enter it as Bellingham’s first Pro-Am entry in the WA Beer Awards!

We’ll reset the spreadsheet for 2016 and do it again. The basic premise of the BHG HomeBOY is to encourage people to brew more, try brewing new styles, and elevate their game by rewarding participation in homebrew competitions. Points are awarded throughout the year for participation for both participating and placing in both BJCP sanctioned competitions as well as our own less formal bi-monthly club competitions. If you enter beers in any homebrew competitions this year, make sure to email bellinghamhomebrewersguild@gmail.com or let one of the club officers know about it so we can grant you points.

Learn to Homebrew Day 2015

The 17th annual AHA Learn to Homebrew Day is Saturday, November 7th.  The BHG will again be hosting a big group brew where members will be showing both each other and non-brewing friends how they do their thing.  Anyone’s welcome to bring equipment and come brew with us, or just come hang out and ask questions and watch.  We’ll be going from around 9am to 4pm, and providing donuts for breakfast and brats for lunch!  Feel free to bring some homebrew of course!

Location: 3600 Toad Lake Rd (Doug Burghart’s house)

Best of the Bay Winners Announced

Congratulations to James Martini of Sedro-Wooley for taking best of show this year with his brown porter with toasted coconut and getting to take home the trophy mug to drink from proudly for the next year.  Also, congratulations to our People’s Choice award winner at this year’s award ceremony, Justin Bajema’s Kriek.  All the winners have been posted at http://www.bellinghambrewers.com/competition/.

We had 185 entries to judge this year from 55 brewers.  8 different stewards assisted 25 judges in evaluating them and providing feedback over the course of 26 flights of judging.  We had 19 categories that we were able to hand out gold, silver, and copper awards out for.  54 entries came from brewers identifying themselves as being with the BHG (almost 30%) which I think is the best local participation we’ve had yet.  BHG members did quite well in taking home some hardware too which I’m quite proud of – 16 medals!

A big thanks again to everyone who donated time to help judge, steward, sort bottles, setup the awards ceremony, donated prizes, etc.  I’d like to specifically call out for their significant contributions to making this event happen – Neal Tognazzini, Andrew Richardson, Michael Gan, Erica & Craig Simons, Jason Mantello, Robert Arzoo, Kulshan Brewing, and Boundary Bay, though many many others pitched in as well.  I thought this year’s event went fantastically thanks to their efforts.
